Centering

Centering refers to how evenly the printed image is positioned within the card's physical borders. Graders measure the white space (or colored border) on all four sides of the image to assess balance. A perfectly centered card has equal margins top-to-bottom and left-to-right. Even minor shifts are common in vintage and modern production, since cards are cut from large sheets and mechanical tolerances vary.

Centering is one of the four core grading factors used by professional grading companies, alongside corners, edges, and surface condition. Poor centering is one of the most frequent reasons an otherwise pristine card fails to achieve a gem-mint grade. A card with excellent corners and surface might still receive a lower overall grade if the image noticeably favors one side. Graders typically rate centering on a scale and describe it in terms of deviation (for example, slightly off-center or heavily off-center). Vertical and horizontal centering are assessed separately, so a card can be well-centered left-to-right but off-center top-to-bottom, or vice versa. Collectors often scrutinize centering first when comparing raw cards, because it is immediately visible and difficult to correct, unlike minor surface wear.
