Insert
An insert is a special card inserted into packs alongside the base set, with its own distinct design and theme rather than being part of the numbered base run. Inserts are printed at various rates, from common to very scarce, and the scarcer, more popular insert sets can be highly sought after.
Because inserts sit outside the base set numbering and follow their own designs, they need to be recorded as their own distinct cards rather than confused with base cards. Noting the insert set and card is part of accurate cataloging, since an insert's value has nothing to do with the base card of the same player. Popular insert sets can carry a following of their own, and the scarcer ones are chased much like parallels.
A popular themed insert of a star player can be worth far more than that player's plain base card from the same set.
