Autograph

An autograph is a card that bears the signature of the player, athlete, or subject pictured on it. Autographs are among the most sought-after modern card variations because they add a direct connection between collector and person. Manufacturers typically produce autograph cards in limited quantities and often announce their rarity via serial numbering or print-run disclosure. Authentication and placement of the signature are critical value factors. On-card autographs, where the player signs directly on the card stock, command higher demand than sticker autographs, in which manufacturers apply a pre-signed sticker to the card surface. Many autograph cards carry third-party certification labels that confirm the signature's authenticity and quality, lending collector confidence and consistency to trading and cataloging.

Autographed cards span all sports, entertainment, and trading card categories. A collector tracking autographs should note the authentication method used by the maker, whether the signature sits on the card face or back, the ink color, and any conditional issues like fading or placement drift. Serial-numbered autographs and those paired with memorabilia inserts (such as patch cards) create additional layers of scarcity and appeal. When building a collection portfolio, document which autographs carry third-party grading and which are raw, as certification status significantly influences how other collectors perceive condition and value in the secondary market.
