Promo

A promo is a promotional card released by a manufacturer outside the normal set distribution channels. Promos are typically given away at organized play events, included in special products, bundled with magazines or merchandise, or distributed as part of retail partnerships or sponsorships. They are identified by their own card numbering system, often prefixed with a letter or symbol that distinguishes them from the base set, making them easy to spot in a collection.

Promo cards hold value based on scarcity and collector demand rather than pack odds. Some promos are printed in very limited quantities, making them harder to obtain than rare cards from sealed products. Others are produced in larger runs but remain desirable because they commemorate a specific event, feature alternative artwork, or were available for a short window only. When cataloging, record the promo's code and source (tournament prize, store event, magazine inclusion) to establish its provenance and rarity tier. Condition matters significantly, as promos handled at events often show wear. Tracking promos separately from standard-set cards helps you understand your collection's true makeup and spot gaps in your promo holdings.

Example

A card marked 'PR1-001' distributed as a prize at a regional championship tournament is a promo that may be more scarce than any card in the official tournament set.
